About the Event
Toronto’s Sankofa Square will become a lively gathering place for music, dance and community on Saturday, August 22, 2026. As part of a three-day cultural celebration running from August 21 to 23, the Saturday program is centred on a high-energy block party inspired by Afrobeats, Dancehall and global Afrodiasporic rhythms.
Taking place from 1:00 PM to 11:00 PM, the day offers a chance to experience live community DJ sets, global musical showcases and dynamic dancers in the heart of downtown Toronto. Admission is free, and the festival is family-friendly and open to all.
A Saturday dedicated to rhythm and movement
The festival’s second day is designed around the energy of a full-day outdoor celebration. Community DJs will help shape the atmosphere, while musical performances and dance presentations bring a range of Afrodiasporic sounds and styles to Sankofa Square. For listeners who enjoy contemporary African and Caribbean-influenced music, the program’s focus on Afrobeats, Dancehall and global rhythms provides a strong reason to spend part of the day downtown. The event also creates space for audiences to enjoy the movement, expression and communal spirit that connect music and dance across the diaspora.Featuring Mýa
The Saturday lineup includes R&B artist Mýa. Her appearance brings more than two decades of chart-topping music to the festival, including Case of the Ex (Whatcha Gonna Do), Best of Me, My Love Is Like...Wo and the Grammy Award-winning global hit Lady Marmalade. Her performance adds a familiar R&B presence to a day built around global musical showcases, making the Saturday program appealing to longtime fans as well as visitors looking to discover a broad range of sounds.Part of a wider cultural weekend
The Saturday block party is one part of the broader SankofaFest program. Friday’s opening day highlights fashion and a marketplace with curated vendors, food, live DJs and runway shows, while Sunday is dedicated to community, heritage and future-focused programming. Across the weekend, the festival celebrates the richness, joy and resilience of global Black culture through music, fashion, art, film and community. On Saturday, visitors can focus on the music and performance atmosphere while enjoying a free public event at Sankofa Square, located at 1 Dundas Street East. Whether you are planning an afternoon of dancing, an evening of live music or a full day immersed in Toronto’s cultural life, the August 22 program offers a welcoming way to experience SankofaFest in the downtown core.
