About the Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the oldest and most recognizable franchises in the National Hockey League. The Toronto NHL franchise dates to 1917 and played first as Toronto, later known as the Arenas, before becoming the Toronto St. Patricks in 1919. The club adopted the Toronto Maple Leafs name in 1927.

The Leafs are part of the NHL's historic Original Six and have played generations of memorable games against rivals including the Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings. The club moved from Maple Leaf Gardens to the arena now known as Scotiabank Arena in 1999.

Toronto Maple Leafs Stanley Cup Championships

Toronto's franchise has won 13 Stanley Cup championships. Two came before the Maple Leafs name was adopted — in 1918 as the Arenas and in 1922 as the St. Patricks — followed by 11 championships as the Maple Leafs.

The Historic 1942 Stanley Cup Comeback

One of the most remarkable championship runs in NHL history came in 1942. Toronto fell behind the Detroit Red Wings three games to none in the Stanley Cup Final, then won four consecutive games to capture the championship. Toronto became the first team to overcome a 3–0 series deficit in a best-of-seven Stanley Cup Final.

Bill Barilko's 1951 Stanley Cup Winner

In 1951, defenceman Bill Barilko scored the Stanley Cup-winning overtime goal against the Montreal Canadiens in Game 5 of the Final at Maple Leaf Gardens. Barilko died in a plane crash later that summer, turning the championship goal into one of the most remembered stories in Maple Leafs history.

The 1960s Dynasty and the 1967 Championship

The Leafs won three consecutive Stanley Cups in 1962, 1963 and 1964 before returning to the top in 1967. Toronto defeated the Montreal Canadiens in six games in the 1967 Stanley Cup Final, with captain George Armstrong scoring an empty-net goal to seal Game 6. The title was Toronto's 13th Stanley Cup and the final championship of the NHL's Original Six era.

Historic Maple Leafs Moments and Accomplishments

Darryl Sittler's 10-Point Game

On February 7, 1976, Maple Leafs captain Darryl Sittler produced one of hockey's greatest individual performances. Sittler recorded six goals and four assists for 10 points against the Boston Bruins at Maple Leaf Gardens. The 10-point performance remains the NHL record for most points by one player in a single game.

The 1993 Playoff Run

The early 1990s brought another memorable era to Toronto. Led by Doug Gilmour and a revitalized roster, the 1992–93 Maple Leafs reached the conference final and came within one victory of reaching the Stanley Cup Final. Toronto returned to the conference final again the following season.

Mats Sundin and a New Generation

Mats Sundin became one of the defining Maple Leafs of the modern era. The Hockey Hall of Fame centre served as Toronto captain from 1997 to 2008 and helped lead the Leafs to the Eastern Conference Final in 1999 and 2002. Sundin remains one of the franchise's all-time scoring leaders.

Auston Matthews Sets the Maple Leafs Goal Record

Auston Matthews added another major accomplishment to Maple Leafs history in January 2026 when he moved past Sundin to become the franchise's career goals leader. The milestone connected a new generation of Leafs hockey with one of the team's most celebrated modern legends.
