About the Toronto Raptors

The Toronto Raptors joined the NBA in 1995 as part of the league’s expansion into Canada. Since the Vancouver Grizzlies relocated in 2001, Toronto has been Canada’s only NBA franchise, giving the Raptors a fan base that reaches far beyond the Greater Toronto Area.

The franchise’s identity has evolved from the original purple dinosaur uniforms of the 1990s to the nationally recognized We The North era, which began during the 2014 playoffs and became a rallying cry for basketball fans across Canada.

Toronto Raptors Championships and Accomplishments

The Raptors won Atlantic Division titles in 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020. Their defining accomplishment came in 2019, when Toronto captured both its first Eastern Conference championship and its first NBA championship.

The 2019 Toronto Raptors NBA Championship

The 2018–19 season transformed Raptors history. Toronto acquired Kawhi Leonard before the season and entered the playoffs with championship expectations. The postseason produced several of the most famous moments in Canadian basketball history.

Kawhi Leonard’s Four-Bounce Game 7 Winner

On May 12, 2019, Toronto faced the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. With the score tied, Kawhi Leonard launched a corner jumper over Joel Embiid as time expired. The ball bounced on the rim four times before dropping through, giving Toronto a 92–90 win.

Raptors Win the 2019 NBA Finals

Toronto went on to defeat the Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference Finals and advanced to face the Golden State Warriors. On June 13, 2019, the Raptors won Game 6 in Oakland 114–110, taking the NBA Finals four games to two and becoming NBA champions for the first time.

Kawhi Leonard was named Finals MVP. Kyle Lowry and Pascal Siakam each scored 26 points in the championship-clinching Game 6, helping Toronto become the first NBA franchise based outside the United States to win the league championship.

Vince Carter and the Rise of Raptors Basketball

Vince Carter changed the visibility of basketball in Toronto after arriving in 1998. Carter won the 1998–99 NBA Rookie of the Year Award and became one of the league’s biggest stars, with his performance in the 2000 Slam Dunk Contest helping turn “Air Canada” into an international basketball icon.

With Carter leading the team, Toronto reached the playoffs for the first time in 2000 and won its first playoff series in 2001 before advancing to the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Vince Carter’s No. 15 Retired

On November 2, 2024, the Raptors retired Vince Carter’s No. 15 at Scotiabank Arena. Carter became the first player in Toronto Raptors history to have his number retired. He was also inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2024.

Chris Bosh, DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry

Chris Bosh became the face of the Raptors through much of the 2000s and helped Toronto win the 2007 Atlantic Division title. Bosh remains the franchise’s all-time leader in total rebounds and blocked shots.

DeMar DeRozan developed into one of the most important players in Raptors history after being drafted in 2009. He remains the franchise’s all-time leader in total points with 13,296.

Kyle Lowry helped lead the Raptors through their most successful sustained period. He remains the franchise leader in total assists and steals and was a central part of Toronto’s 2019 championship team.
