Deborah Cox

Born and raised in Toronto, Deborah Cox began performing professionally at a young age, appearing in television commercials and talent competitions before developing into a working vocalist. Her early career included serving as a backing singer for Céline Dion, experience that helped prepare her for an international solo career.

After signing with Arista Records in the 1990s, Cox released her self-titled debut album and quickly established herself as a major R&B vocalist. Her follow-up album One Wish produced “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here,” a defining crossover hit that became one of the era’s most recognizable R&B records and demonstrated the global reach of a Toronto-born singer.

Cox continued building a career across R&B, dance music and pop while also becoming a major stage performer. Her Broadway and touring theatre roles expanded her reputation beyond recording, showcasing a level of versatility that few Canadian singers have matched.

Her achievements include multiple JUNO Awards, numerous chart-topping dance records and historic recognition as the first Black woman inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Toronto also honoured her with a Key to the City and a Deborah Cox Day.
