Jully Black

Born and raised in Toronto, Jully Black developed her voice within the city’s music community before emerging as a songwriter and recording artist in the 1990s. Her early work connected her to many of the artists building Toronto’s R&B and hip-hop scene, and she became known both for her own performances and for writing and collaborating with others.

Black built a national profile through a catalogue of R&B and soul music that showcased one of Canada’s most recognizable voices. Her combination of power, personality and versatility allowed her to move between radio records, live performance, television and major public events.

Her career expanded into television hosting and acting, and later into acclaimed musical theatre. Her starring work in Caroline, or Change earned major Toronto theatre recognition and demonstrated the breadth of her ability as a performer.
