Toronto-born singer, songwriter, producer and XO founder whose rise from Scarborough’s underground music scene helped reshape modern R&B and establish Toronto as a global pop-culture capital.
Born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye in Toronto in 1990, The Weeknd emerged from the city’s early-2010s underground music scene and became one of the most globally successful artists ever associated with Toronto. Raised in Scarborough, he first built intrigue by releasing music online with little public information attached to it. The mystery, cinematic production and dark alternative-R&B sound surrounding early projects such as House of Balloons, Thursday and Echoes of Silence helped create a new lane in contemporary R&B while drawing international attention back toward Toronto’s rapidly changing music culture.
His connection to the city is inseparable from the rise of XO, the creative collective and record label that grew alongside his career. Toronto imagery, collaborators and the city’s late-night atmosphere became part of The Weeknd’s early visual and musical identity. His early work also crossed paths with Drake’s Toronto movement, including contributions to Take Care, placing him at the centre of a period when Toronto artists were beginning to reshape global pop, hip-hop and R&B.
From there, The Weeknd expanded far beyond the underground. Albums including Beauty Behind the Madness, Starboy, After Hours, Dawn FM and Hurry Up Tomorrow turned him into a stadium-level artist whose music spans R&B, pop, electronic music and cinematic concept albums. Songs such as “Can’t Feel My Face,” “The Hills,” “Starboy,” “Save Your Tears” and “Blinding Lights” became worldwide hits, while his visual presentation developed into one of the most recognizable creative brands in modern music.
The Weeknd’s impact also reaches beyond recording. He has performed on some of the world’s biggest stages, including the Super Bowl halftime show, developed large-scale touring productions, moved into film and television, and helped turn XO into an internationally recognized cultural brand. Even as his career became increasingly global, Toronto remained a foundational part of his story and public identity.
For Toronto, The Weeknd represents the city’s transformation from an emerging music market into a source of globally dominant pop culture. His rise from Scarborough and Toronto’s independent music ecosystem to international stadiums demonstrated that an artist could build a distinctive sound and visual world from the city and export it worldwide. That combination of Toronto roots, creative influence and global reach makes The Weeknd a natural member of the Talk of Toronto Hall of Fame.
The Weeknd helped change how the world hears and sees Toronto. His early anonymous releases, XO identity, cinematic alternative-R&B sound and eventual stadium-level success showed that a distinctly Toronto-rooted artist could reshape global pop culture without abandoning the atmosphere and creative community that formed him.
