The TTC and GO Transit will run on holiday schedules, while major malls, LCBO stores, libraries and government offices close across Toronto.
Toronto’s Labour Day holiday falls on Monday, September 7, 2026, bringing changes to transit, shopping, city services and attractions. The TTC will run a Sunday-style holiday schedule, GO Transit will follow its Saturday timetable, and several major malls will close.
There are still plenty of options for the long weekend’s final day. The Canadian National Exhibition runs through Labour Day, major attractions remain open, and daytime curbside garbage collection continues for Toronto homes.
Transit runs on reduced holiday schedules
The TTC will operate on a holiday schedule that follows Sunday service levels. Buses, streetcars and subway lines will start at approximately 6 a.m. Routes that do not normally run on Sundays will not operate. No subway closures are scheduled for September 7.
Visitors heading to the CNE should allow extra time around Exhibition Place. The TTC has increased service on the 29 Dufferin, 929 Dufferin Express, 509 Harbourfront and 511 Bathurst routes. Event-related diversions will also affect parts of the west end and east Toronto.
GO Transit will use a Saturday schedule. Some routes do not offer weekend service, so passengers should check their specific trip before leaving. GO is also adjusting service on Lakeshore East and Lakeshore West during the CNE’s final days.
Most major malls close, with a few exceptions
Labour Day is one of Ontario’s mandatory retail closure holidays. Exceptions can include small food retailers, qualifying pharmacies, gas stations, licensed businesses, restaurants and businesses in designated tourist areas.
- Open: CF Toronto Eaton Centre, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Closed: Yorkdale Shopping Centre, Scarborough Town Centre, Fairview Mall, Sherway Gardens, Dufferin Mall, Shops at Don Mills and Centrepoint Mall.
- Open elsewhere in the GTA: Markville, Pacific Mall, Vaughan Mills, Bramalea City Centre and Square One, with hours varying by location.
Individual stores, restaurants, cinemas and grocery retailers may set different hours inside or beside closed malls. Check directly with the business before making a special trip.
LCBO stores close, while some food and pharmacy locations open
LCBO stores will be closed on Monday. Select Beer Store locations are scheduled to open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Rabba Fine Foods and Eataly have locations open, while other supermarkets may follow their own holiday schedules.
Some Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall pharmacies will also open. Pharmacy hours vary widely, so calling ahead is especially important for prescription pickup.
Attractions and pools offer Labour Day options
The CNE will be open for its final day at Exhibition Place. Other listed attractions include the CN Tower, Ripley’s Aquarium, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Casa Loma, the Hockey Hall of Fame, the Toronto Zoo, Riverdale Farm and the Aga Khan Museum.
Hours differ by venue, and some attractions may require advance reservations. Several City of Toronto pools will also offer drop-in swimming, including Alex Duff Memorial Pool, Sunnyside Gus Ryder Outdoor Pool, Riverdale Park East and West Mall Outdoor Pool.
Libraries, offices and some waste services close
Toronto Public Library branches will be closed. Banks, government offices, ServiceOntario locations and Service Canada offices will also close for the holiday.
Canada Post will not deliver or collect mail, although privately operated postal counters may follow the hours of their host businesses.
Daytime residential curbside garbage collection continues without interruption. Multi-residential buildings will not have Monday collection; that pickup moves to Tuesday, September 8, with Tuesday’s collection moving to Wednesday, September 9. City transfer stations and drop-off depots will be closed on September 7.
Toronto’s 311 service remains available around the clock. For transit, shopping and attractions, confirm the latest hours before leaving, since schedules can differ between locations operated by the same company.
