Eligible TTC riders now travel free for the rest of a calendar month after 47 paid trips, as long as they use the same card or device for every tap.
Toronto’s new TTC fare cap is now in effect, giving eligible riders free trips after they have paid for 47 rides in a calendar month. The change began Tuesday, September 1, and removes the need for some riders to buy a monthly pass.
The program matters most to people who use the TTC regularly for work, school and other trips. Once a rider reaches the 47-paid-trip limit, additional eligible rides that month cost nothing.
Who qualifies for the TTC fare cap?
The cap applies automatically to Adult, Youth, Senior and Fair Pass customers who pay with a PRESTO card, PRESTO in a mobile wallet, an Interac Debit card, or a credit card, including cards stored in a mobile wallet.
The TTC’s calculation is based on paid trips, not every individual boarding. Riders must use the same payment card or device each time to build toward the 47-trip limit.
Your payment method matters
A physical card and that same card in a mobile wallet are treated as separate payment methods. A smartphone, smartwatch and physical card can also each have their own trip count.
For example, switching between a PRESTO card and a phone wallet during the month can prevent those rides from contributing to one shared total. Riders who want to reach the cap should choose one card or device and use it for every TTC tap.
That rule applies even after free travel begins. Riders must continue tapping when they board a vehicle or enter a station. The TTC says tapping is still required to open fare gates, validate the trip, record proof of payment and confirm eligibility to travel at no additional cost.
How the cap could change a regular commute
A rider making one trip to work and one trip home on 20 workdays would make 40 paid trips before adding any evening or weekend travel. That rider would not reach the cap through weekday commuting alone, while someone who also uses the TTC for school, appointments or other regular trips could pass 47.
That distinction was reflected in commuter reactions reported by CP24. One rider questioned whether 47 trips would offer much help to people making only a standard work commute. A University of Toronto student said the threshold was achievable through a combination of work and school travel.
What happens to monthly passes?
The TTC says Adult 12-Month Passes and the TTC Post-Secondary Monthly Pass continue to provide the best value for customers who use them consistently. Riders who hold either product should continue using it, according to the transit agency.
For everyone else using an eligible payment method, the key habit is simple: tap with the same card or device every time, keep tapping after reaching the limit, and remember that the count resets with each new calendar month.
