Toronto has added a 25-year-old right-hander with upper-level experience, major strikeout numbers and command concerns, sending 20-year-old pitching prospect Sebastian Rodríguez to Los Angeles.
The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired a power arm who could help their pitching depth sooner rather than later. The club picked up right-hander José Rodríguez from the Los Angeles Dodgers on September 1, sending fellow righty Sebastian Rodríguez to Los Angeles.
Both players are minor leaguers, but the deal favours different timelines. José Rodríguez, 25, has reached the upper levels and brings significant strikeout ability. Sebastian Rodríguez, 20, signed internationally this summer and has only nine innings of professional experience.
For Toronto, the move adds another potential relief option during the final weeks of the season. It is not a guaranteed bullpen solution, but Rodríguez’s fastball and swing-and-miss profile give the Blue Jays an arm worth evaluating quickly.
Why José Rodríguez interests the Blue Jays
Rodríguez signed with the Dodgers out of Mexico in 2019 and has worked his way through the minor leagues. Since the start of 2025, he has thrown 88⅔ innings, mostly at Triple-A, with a 4.67 earned-run average.
The more revealing numbers are his strikeout and walk rates. Rodríguez has struck out 33.2 per cent of opposing hitters over that span, while walking 14 per cent. He can miss bats at an impressive rate, but his control will determine how safely Toronto can use him in higher-leverage situations.
His arsenal includes six pitches. His four-seam fastball and sinker average around 96 miles per hour, and he also throws a changeup, cutter, slider and curveball. His changeup is considered his best pitch, while the slider gives him another strong weapon.
That combination explains the appeal. Toronto is acquiring a pitcher whose raw stuff has already played in the upper minors, then betting that its development staff can help him throw more consistent strikes.
A post-deadline move built around immediate depth
Major League Baseball clubs can still trade minor leaguers after the main trade deadline. That gave Los Angeles a chance to move a pitcher who did not appear to have an immediate path to its major-league roster.
The Dodgers may also have been facing the possibility of losing Rodríguez in the coming weeks through minor-league free agency. Moving him now brings back a much younger project instead of allowing the organization to receive nothing in return.
Toronto is making the opposite calculation. The Blue Jays are giving up a long-term lottery ticket for a pitcher who is closer to the majors, even though José Rodríguez still needs to refine his command.
Sebastian Rodríguez has thrown nine innings in the Dominican Summer League. He allowed six earned runs, struck out 11, gave up six hits and issued three walks, while also hitting one batter and throwing four wild pitches.
The trade leaves both teams with a clear developmental bet. Los Angeles gets more time with a young international arm. Toronto gets a more advanced pitcher whose strikeout rate could make him useful if he can keep the free passes under control.
For Blue Jays fans, José Rodríguez is best viewed as a live-arm depth addition with upside, not an instant fix. His next opportunity will be to show that his six-pitch mix can produce reliable outs as the organization weighs its late-season pitching options.
