The Spanish queer drama earned TIFF’s top audience prize after a Cannes breakthrough, with a theatrical release planned before its Netflix debut.
Toronto audiences have given “La Bola Negra” the biggest vote of confidence at TIFF. The Spanish-language drama won the festival’s People’s Choice Award on Sunday, September 20, adding a major audience prize to its international festival run.
Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, the filmmaking duo known as Los Javis, the film follows three men across different periods of Spanish history. Desire, repression, memory and queer identity connect the story, which was inspired by an unfinished work by Federico García Lorca.
That combination gives “La Bola Negra” weight beyond its TIFF win. It is a large-scale historical drama built around intimate lives and the risks of being seen. The result has drawn attention from both festival audiences and the awards circuit.
A TIFF audience prize after a strong Cannes run
The film had already made an impression at Cannes, where Calvo and Ambrossi shared the Best Director prize with Paweł Pawlikowski for “Fatherland.” Spain also selected “La Bola Negra” as its submission for the 2027 Academy Awards’ International Feature Film race.
Its Toronto reception adds another layer to that momentum. TIFF’s People’s Choice Award reflects the response of festival audiences, giving the film a strong local endorsement as it moves toward wider release.
Calvo and Ambrossi were not in Toronto to accept the award. They were in Spain promoting the film, and TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey read their message at the presentation. The directors described the project as deeply personal and said that seeing audiences connect with it was the greatest gift they could receive.
The cast includes Penélope Cruz, Glenn Close and Miguel Bernardeau, alongside Guitarricadelafuente, Carlos González and Lola Dueñas. The production was shot on 35mm and moves between 1932, 1937 and 2017.
When Toronto viewers may be able to watch it
Netflix acquired “La Bola Negra” after Cannes and plans to release it in cinemas on October 16, 2026, followed by its streaming debut on December 2.
Those dates do not confirm a Toronto booking. Local theatres and the number of Canadian screens have not yet been announced, so viewers will need to wait for listings closer to the October release.
For anyone who missed the TIFF screenings, the Netflix date is the clearest confirmed viewing option. The theatrical window also gives “La Bola Negra” a chance to build on the response it received in Toronto before reaching a wider home audience.
